Shane Doan To Choose Between Rangers, Penguins Or Canucks If He Leaves Coyotes

Published on August 6, 2012 by   ·   1 Comment

The Shane Doan free agency tour is still in progress, but it appears as if things are becoming a bit more settled. The 35-year-old free agent who has spent his entire 16 year NHL career with the Phoenix Coyotes may be leaving the desert due to an unsettled ownership situation, and, if he does in fact leave, he has reportedly narrowed down his list of tams to play for to the New York Rangers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Vancouver Canucks.

Still, no timetable has been set as to when Doan may choose to sign.

It has been difficult for Doan to consider leaving Phoenix, but he wants to go to a team where he knows he can compete for a Stanley Cup championship, as well as one who will not bolt for a new city. With the unsettled situation in Phoenix, things are still a bit up in the air.

Any of the other three teams make sense in terms of a title contender, and all three probably are more than willing to offer Doan the reported four year deal worth roughly $30 million. If not, you would not expect those three teams to still be in the running.

While Doan will turn 36 during the first month of the upcoming 2012-2013 NHL season – provided they do indeed start the season on time – the veteran winger is still highly sought after, despite the fact that his numbers have declined a bit over the past few seasons. Still, Doan is as durable and close to consistent as they come, making him the top remaining free agent on the open market. He could be the missing piece to any of the three teams who are seeking his services.

If the rumors are true, then Doan is favoring signing with the Rangers. He has ties to much of the organizations’ management and is reportedly even weighing taking a three year deal to sign with New York, who already acquired Rick Nash to help atone for the loss of Marian Gaborik to at least begin next season. The Blueshirts were just a couple of games away from reaching the Stanley Cup Finals last year, so adding Doan to go along with Nash could be just enough to get them back to the finals for the first time since 1994.

But the Penguins and Canucks remain in the running, with the Penguins holding a slight edge over the Canucks due to finances. Vancouver would still probably have to deal away a player or two in order to sign Doan, while Pittsburgh already dealt Jordan Staal.

Either way, everyone around the league is hoping that this saga soon comes to an end. If the Rangers up their offer to four years, it is widely believed that Doan will sign with New York. But even if they keep it at three, he could still land in The Big Apple as soon as this week.
