Is Columbus Blue Jackets G Steve Mason on the way out?

Published on May 1, 2012 by   ·   No Comments

In the thick of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the basement teams that bottomed out long ago are still figuring out their road maps for the future.

And for the Columbus Blue Jackets, their road maps consists of several routes, and lots of different avenues.

One decision is whether or not to keep moving forward with goaltender Steve Mason, once highly regarded as a perspective franchise goalie.

Now, after a 16-26-3 record with a 3.39 GAA and 8.94 save percentage this season, questions abound, and decisions have to be made about his contribution to the organization.

Or, perhaps, if the organization is holding back Mason.

Regardless, the Columbus Dispatch writes the following:

“We need a different look in goal,” (GM Scott) Howson said. “We need better play from that position. I told Steve in our exit interviews (this month) that we’re going to have a different look at that position next year, but that right now, nobody can predict what form that’s going to take.”

Here are the options, the Dispatch says:

  • Trade his $3.2-million salary for next season. (Not an easy task.)
  • Put him on waivers.
  • Keep him as a backup.

With Howson’s candid view about the state of the crease, there’s a possibility there will be a shakeup between the pipes in the offseason. But for Mason’s sake, a trade looks to be his best hope and last chance to prove his ability as a No. 1 goalie.
