Could Brian Campbell be first defenseman to win Lady Byng Trophy in nearly 60 years?

Despite how the Florida Panthers finish up in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Brian Campbell could bring home a piece of hardware a defenseman hasn’t done in nearly 60 years.

Brian Campbell, shown here, is up for the Lady Byng Trophy this year. A defender hasn't won in nearly 60 years. Is this year the year?

And that’s take home the Lady Byng Trophy.

Campbell, along with Jordan Eberle (Edmonton Oilers) and Matt Moulson (New York Islanders).

In 1953-54 Red Kelly of the Detroit Red Wings won the Lady Byng for his 16-goal, 33-assist season in 62 games. He was issued 18 penalty minutes.

Kelly would go on to be a four-time Lady Byng, winning one in 1961 with the Toronto Maple Leafs as a centre.

As for Campbell’s stats, in comparison, he’s registered four goals and 49 assists in 82 games and just six penalty minutes.

Eberle put up more competitive numbers with a 34-goal campaign and 42 assists. He spent all of just 10 minutes in the sin bin. Meanwhile, Moulson registered 36 goals with 33 assists on a 6-penalty-minute season.

The Lady Byng may be leaning toward Eberle, as far as stats go.

But will Campbell’s defense stats factor? He finished 64th with 118 blocked shots, and also registered a lowly 46 hits.

If the Lady Byng isn’t measured purely by statistics, then, maybe Campbell has a chance. But at the end of the day, the defender may be on hold for the honour for at least one more year.
