It’s been a difficult week for professional athletes visiting Southwest Florida that choose to have a few drinks after work. Last week, two MLB players in Southwest Florida were arrested on DUI charges while in Southwest Florida for Spring Training. Now, word surfaces that anĀ East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) player was arrested on Friday night on grand theft charges after stealing a taxi cab.
Trenton Campbell, of the South Carolina Stingrays stole a Checker Cab from the front of the Blue Martini at the Mercato shops at 2:30 am. Allegedly, Campbell asked the taxi cab driver for a ride but the driver said he had to pick up a previously scheduled fare. Once the driver left the vehicle in order to find his customers, Campbell jumped in a stole the car.The cab company was able to locate the vehicle using GPS. Police found the cab abandoned on the side of the road a few miles away. Campbell was located after police canvassed the area behind a nearby shopping center.
Campbell was arrested on grand theft charges and his team, the South Carolina Stingrays, announced his suspension. The Stingrays were in the Southwest Florida region to take on the Florida Everblades. The Everblades defeated the Stingrays 5-2.
