Will New York Islanders’ Matt Martin set season record for hits?

Published on March 2, 2012 by   ·   No Comments

The New York Islanders’ Matt Martin has been on a roll of taking down opponents since November, and he isn’t slowing down any time soon.

The Islanders winger currently is sitting pretty at the top of the hits category with 293.

Does it matter? Maybe not to some, as Martin isn’t an NHLer on most folk’s radar. But it’s bragging rights, none-the-less.

Cal Clutterbuck currently holds the single-season record of 356 hits. He did that his rookie season in 2008-09. That’s an average of 4.3 hits per game. Every game.

For Martin, he’s 4.6 hits per game throughout the 63 Islanders games. (Prior to Thursday’s loss to the Philadelphia Flyers.)

So, obviously, Martin is on pace to smash this record. If only the NHL was keeping track of hits prior to 2002.

Regardless, Martin is a force to be reckoned with. Here’s living proof:

Got to appreciate the adjustments he makes into every hit. It seems that a good portion of the incidents he’s pegged as the target, sizes up, and uses any part of his body — even the legs — to move in, and deliver big.

Great hits leads to great opportunities. Especially when they’re on the forecheck, but Martin is also a good neutral zone hitter.

His talents aren’t overlooked, and neither should his achievement, if accomplished this season.
