Should we be surprised by the Phoenix Coyotes this season?

The Phoenix Coyotes aren’t suppose to be in the hunt for a playoff spot.

In fact, they’re suppose to be 14th or 15th in the Western Conference, and not seventh.

Dave Tippett, shown in this file photo earlier this season, is keeping his squad in the hunt for another playoffs spot.

How has a franchise without an owner propelled against unsustainable odds?

The answer may very well be the same as year’s past: coach Dave Tippett.

When offense has not been as his disposal, Tippett has demanded the opposite

The ‘Yotes currently are ranked eighth in the league in penalty kill at 84.4 percent.¬†And why not? They have Keith Yandle and Adrian Aucoin riding high on the blue line.

And Phoenix is soaring just at the right time as usual, going 8-0-1 so far this month while out scoring opponents 26-13. Victims have included the Red Wings, Sharks, Blackhawks and Kings.

So, ultimately, should we be caught off guard by this sudden jolt of prowess down in Phoenix? Sure, they may be another first-round bust. But, maybe not. Maybe this year it’ll be at the hands of the Vancouver Canucks instead of the Detroit Red Wings.

Either way, if the ‘Yotes can achieve more with less, again, it’s almost unthinkable what great opportunities Tippett will have in the near future.
