Look for Jonas Gustavsson to be dismissed from the Toronto Maple Leafs

The Toronto Star speculated today that Jonas Gustavsson may be done as a Maple Leaf.

With personal issues casting a dark cloud, and his performance not getting any better, it may be time to severe ties with the backup goalie who once looked like he had a shot being the No. 1 while James Reimer was injured earlier this season.

Where will Gustavsson go? What will the Leafs do for a backup?

Here’s what the Star wrote:

Hand the crease to James Reimer and hope he can recalibrate, regain his confidence and summon the beast that was so good down the stretch last year, albeit in games that weren’t pressure-packed like they are now.

Or get somebody else as a short-term solution to stop the bleeding. Nikolai Khabibulin, Evgeni Nabokov, whoever. No matter who it is, the problem will have to be addressed this summer. Again.

But Gustavsson is out as an option, and really, given that he’s an unrestricted free agent this summer and there have been no serious attempts to get him signed, its doubtful the Leafs saw him as useful beyond this season anyway.

There’s no chance really any team would consider Gustavsson an upgrade, unfortunately. Look for him not be offered a contract this summer. And look for him to go back overseas, possibly, as he hasn’t established consistency this season.
