Trade Rumor: Mixed signals of Edmonton Oilers’ Ryan Smyth waiving no-trade clause scenario

Published on February 7, 2012 by   ·   No Comments

With trade rumors circulating the last couple of days involving Ryan Smyth of the Edmonton Oilers, all the evidence on the table may not amount to the veteran agreeing to being shipped out as a rental player. (See: Rangers.)

The rumor suggests the New York Rangers are seeking his services through the playoffs in a very competitive run.

He may consider it, reports say.

Despite Smyth’s past with Rangers GM Glen Sather, the chances still remain slim. Even if Smyth wants a chance at the Stanley Cup as a rental player, we can recall the moment he was traded to the New York Islanders in 2007: he was devastated. “Captain Canada” cherishes his time in Edmonton over a major contendor. And this is proven with his triumphant return to Edmonton over last summer.

Then, there’s the Rangers relatively being close to the cap ceiling, and Smyth earns $6.25 million per year.

It sounds like a good partnership renewed with Smyth and Sather, but the Rangers and Oilers first have to come up with a deal.
