Toronto Maple Leafs’ James Reimer and Buffalo Sabres’ Ryan Miller both got shelved for a bit this season as victims of goalie crashing.
Brian Gionta collided with Reimer while Milan Lucic barreled through Miller in open ice. It would have been a shame if Jimmy Howard of the Detroit Red Wings came out seriously injured after last night.
Twitter erupted and some were appalled by the lack of precaution taken on this play:
Jannik Hansen of the Vancouver Canucks cuts in towards the net, and is left with the only option to slide. However, he glides into Howard at a considerable speed, causing Howard in a conundrum of attempting to play the puck, and break Hansen’s crash.
He wasn’t able to do either.
It’s after the play that sparked outrage, however. Hansen gets up, probably responding to something Nicklas Lidstrom said. Because, from there, Hansen was very fluid in propping himself up to shoving the veteran defenceman.
That’s when Howard lost his cool.
Was last night’s scene another example of a lack of respect to the goalie’s space? You decide.
