Washington Capitals coach Dale Hunter gets first NHL win

Long-timeĀ Ontario Hockey League coach Dale Hunter nabbed his first win of his NHL coaching career tonight against the Ottawa Senators 12 seconds into the overtime period in front of the Washington home crowd.

Dale Hunter, shown during his coaching days with the OHL London Knights, registered his first NHL win Saturday against the visiting Ottawa Senators.

It happened with a Brooks Laich wrist shot assisted by James Chimera and Karl Alzner.

Michael Neuvirth, the backup Washington goalie, improved to 3-4-1 with 32 saves in the contest as Nicklas Backstrom tallied his ninth goal of the season.

Alexander Ovechkin registered a helper on the Caps’ second-period goal scored by Troy Bouwer.

Hunter’s win came in his third coaching game, being shut down in two close contests, 2-1 losses to the St. Louis Blues and Pittsburgh Penguins this week.

The Capitals next play the Florida Panthers on Monday.
