Mom knows best: Mother of James Reimer suspects concussion

Published on November 13, 2011 by   ·   No Comments

James Reimer is said to have suffered an apparent concussion during the Oct. 22 game against the Montreal Canadiens. His comeback has been repetitively delayed.

If you think your mom does a good job embarrassing you in front of your friends, you obviously haven’t met Marlene Reimer, mother to the 23-year-old Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender James Reimer.

Mrs. Reimer was the centre of discussion on CBC Hockey Night in Canada’s Hot Stove, as it appears she knows more about the health of the Leafs’ No. 1 goalie more than the public and the media.

On Wednesday, she told the Toronto Star she is worried the whiplash-like symptoms he’s been suffering since a collision with Montreal Canadiens’ Brian Gionta on Oct. 22 is more serious than the Maple Leafs organization is saying.

Here’s what she had to say:

That’s the frustrating part for us — not knowing what it is, and why they’re not calling it a concussion when they say ‘concussion-like symptoms. Like, how is that not a concussion? … The initial test showed him to be clear of a concussion. But as it goes on, it’s kind of mystifying. He’s okay some days. And some days he’s definitely not okay.

In all seriousness, you can’t blame her.

She and her son are obviously close. And James — unlike last year — was the sure No. 1 this year.

The future can be scary for an up-and-coming goalie who can’t execute longevity and versatility if he’s hurt.

Well, which is it? Whiplash or a concussion?

If it’s a concussion, it isn’t his first. Reimer reportedly suffered a concussion when he was 16.

Either way, we can rest assure Mrs. Reimer will be there taking care of James until he’s healthy again.
