Manny Legace will save the Columbus Blue Jackets

Published on October 26, 2011 by   ·   No Comments

It’s a bold prediction, but a prediction regardless.

On Oct. 18, Manny Legace signed a professional tryout contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets‘ AHL affiliate Springfield Falcons.

That was shortly after being cut from the AHL affiliate of the Florida Panthers, the San Antonio Rampage.

The Panthers need no help.

Manny Legace went 17-22-0 last season in Germany. At 38, he's attempting to make a comeback to the NHL. The Blue Jackets may be that outlet he's looking for.

Jacob Markstrom, the No. 2 goalie, was brilliant in net during Floriday’s 2-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens last night. And¬†Brian Foster, at 24 years old, has been reliable with a 3-2 record and 3.11 GAA. He’s making his strides, being promoted from the Cincinnati Cyclones of the ECHL last year.

But, given Legace’s shelf life at 38 years old, he may have three ¬†years left in the tank, at the most.

Being cut from the Florida affiliate may had been a blessing in disguise. And the silver lining is, of course, being on an NHL affiliate in need of bodies between the pipes.

The Blue Jackets are a mess. Right? They are 0-7-1 after all.

And Steve Mason is a far cry from a qualified No. 2 at this point.

Mark Dekanich has been shelved to start the season with the Blue Jackets while Curtis Sanford is a bit closer from an injury recovery.

This will open the door for Legace, given he can prove himself before the pipeline of goalies gets clogged.

It’s been four years ago since Legace has had a good year with the St. Louis Blues. His downward trajectory began in the 2008-09 season with its AHL affiliate the Peoria Rivermen.

But his time in St. Louis proved he’s more than a decent goalie making good on a team like the Detroit Red Wings in years past.

The Blue Jackets will be his last stop in his NHL journey eventually this season. So, watch out for him to swing some momentum as Columbus prepares for a run to sneak into the playoffs.

Anything can happen in this league. Anything.
