Seasoned minor league veteran Nathan Lutz, 33, was named the first captain for the expansion team of the ECHL, the Chicago Express.

Nathan Lutz will serve as the Express' first franchise captain in the team's inaugural year.

Lutz has not had the chance to play a game in the NHL in his years on the ice, with his professional minor league career starting in 2001-02 with the Reading Royals.

Lutz has also played in the UHL and AHL, most notably back-and-forth with the Milwaukee Admirals (Nashville Predators) and Rockford Ice Hogs (Chicago Blackhawks).

Lutz will also serve as the assistant coach on the bench, in addition to his captaincy.

Last season Lutz tallied 10 goals and 48 assists with the Mississippi RiverKings of the Central Hockey League. He also amassed 108 penalty minutes.

The Chicago Express is GM’ed by Wade Welsh, who led the front office for the Kalamazoo K-Wings previously.

The Express are an ECHL affiliate to the Columbus Blue Jackets.
