Rookie report: Huberdeau needs to bulk up

The No. 3 overall pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft is on a roll for the Florida Panthers.

Jonathan Huberdeau may have three goals in the preseason — all on the last-year ranked 30th power play system — but that doesn’t guarantee an entry-level contract when the final cuts to come Tuesday evening at 5 p.m., the Sun-Sentinel reports.

Jonathan Huberdeau will most likely need to spend one more year in the QMJHL to bulk his size rather than playing in the NHL with the Florida Panthers.

General Manager Dale Tallon cited physicality that may prevent the Memorial Cup champion who won the Canadian Hockey League’s title last season with the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Saint John Sea Dogs.

Huberdeau stands at 6 foot-1 inch but weighs a mere 175 pounds.

“One thing I don’t want is for this kid to get hurt,” Tallon said on NHL Live on Thursday.

The Panthers conclude their season tonight against the New York Islanders.
